Floral fashion fiasco

Mary Beighton (wife of T. E. Beighton), Louise Isabel Willis (wife of Errick Willis), and Beryle Ciley (wife of C. D. Ciley), as shown left to right. The women are cutting a cake for the fiftieth anniversary of a Winnipeg municipal chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, and all are wearing I.O.D.E. pins. Little do they realize that a florist's shop has just thrown up all over their formal wear.

Anyone interested in seeing more fashion fiascos?  Believe me, there are lots.

Lance Armstrong's grandpa?

86-year-old Thomas Cosford demonstrates some amazing flexibility for his or any age while riding his bicycle.  86?!  Are you kidding me?!  I am less than half this man's age and I can barely lift my legs out of bed in the morning.  Rumour has it that Mr. Cosford attempted to enter this year's Tour de France but was denied entry due to speculation of steroid abuse.

Fatty Fine Arts

Diane Coulter, Miss Dominion of Canada, poses next to a sculpture of Prime Minister John A. MacDonald made of styrofoam and shortening.  How glamourous!  I must say, this is by far the best sculpture of a head of state made from animal fat that I have ever seen.  By far!

Lego Legislatures

Freda DeFehr displays her Lego replica model of the Manitoba Legislature to commemorate the province's Centennial.

Three years later she constructed a replica of the Quebec legislative building.  The details in these models are amazing.

Is anyone else imagining a Lego Godzilla rampaging through this woman's house?  No?  Just me?

And the Squirrely goes to ...

Art Chipman, Chair of the Manitoba Liquor Commission, receives this prestigious award.  His job combined with this trophy makes my head hurt with the potential for one liners.  Some of the best around the office are "I hope that thing's stuffed!" and "You don't get high on your own supply!"  I welcome your own smart alec comment.

Hat's off to Mayor Sharpe

Sure, as mayor of Winnipeg you're forced to wear many hats.  But George Sharpe took that notion to a very weird extreme.

Sounds of Silence (left to right): Ernie Kull, Dave Westmacott, Bob Finnbogason, Dave King, and Gord Beverage.  Judging from this photo, I'm guessing they got their band name from audience reactions.

Jive Turkey

Back in 1977, Eric Brennan attempted to break the world marathon jive record by dancing for 72 consecutive hours.  A real Canadian hero.  I would buy that man's shirt in a heartbeat.  The annotation on the back of the photograph states that Rose Pelletier was going to be his primary partner during the record attempt but that he would dance with other partners as well.  Ladies, take one look at this guy and I dare you to say no.
