Winnipeg's Illustrated Rock History - Part 5: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Deluxe Chance Band: Terry Barnett, Paul Bergman, Randy Joyce, and Harri Vallittu

Date: December 20, 1975; Photographer: Gregg Burner
Source: Winnipeg Tribune fonds (PC 18, A.81-12) - Box 4, Folder 10113, Item 3

Wood 'n Hannah Band: David Wood, John Hannah (of Harlequin fame!), Harvey Kostenchuk, and Bob Wallace.  I can see many of these fashion choices making a comeback but let's all agree that the shirt Mr. Wallace is rocking should remain in the past.

Date: May 6, 1976; Photographer: Jim Walker

Woodwork: Kathy Brown, Stan Bedernjak, David Wood, and Brad Meadmore

Date: September 8, 1979; Photographer: Gregg Burner
Source: Winnipeg Tribune fonds (PC 18, A.81-12) - Box 19, Folder 10687, Item 11

Jazz-rock band Zdenka: Steve Hegyi, Kerry Ladyshewsky, Danny Pelfrey, Greg Black, Glen Hall, and Bob Fuhr.  Apparently history has decided that the most awesome location to photograph rock bands (and jazz-rock bands) is the stairwell.

  2. IT's nice to see an old friend Stan B. I am screwing on my mac and i have a picture of Stan on a B.C RICH bass. IT's a black and white photo by benson, probably after Woodwork, could be the Vice. Anyways let me know if you have any more photos of truly good winnipeg bands. Thanks Alex Hopper. Keep up the good work.

  3. Thanks for the comment Alex. We have a few more photos of Winnipeg bands in the Winnipeg Tribune collection at the University of Manitoba Archives. I don't know if any of them were any good but their hair never fails to disappoint. Drop in some time to take a look!

    1. I'm not sure if Frank Soda came through these parts prior to the Winnipeg Tribune's folding in 1980 but if we had photos of his exploding head gear I can guarantee you they would be featured in this blog. Thanks for the comment.

    1. Oops - posted in wrong area?

Playground X's lead singer and keyboardist was Reg Mennell. Anyone know what he's up to?

    2. I'm an old friend of Reg's and I've tried just about everything to track him down to touch base. Called his brother Dave a few years ago and even he didn't know where he was (at the time). He's a hard guy to locate. Not sure what he's up to.

(Reg: If you're reading this, it's your old friend Cheryl. Track me down on Facebook.)

  7. Hi Alex. Sorry but I'm not a Winnipeg rock historian. Just an archivist who thinks bands of this era had great hair that deserve a little blog attention. If anyone out there can help Alex out, please post a response!

    1. Hey. I met him at the La Salle Hotel last Friday. He even got on stage with Barry G Player and sang. I think he is doing some writing and recording. He even drove me home. Pretty private. If he calls I will tell him to post on this site. Cheers!
